GOLA is an Ukrainian rock band that emerged amidst the chaos of war, fueled by resilience and the raw drive of its members. The band’s name which means “naked,” is a nod to both vulnerability and a playful twist on their shared surname. Singer Kristina Drygola explains that GOLA started as a way to stay connected during tough times and evolved into a full-blown band project that channels unity and creativity.
Formed in 2022 as the war in Ukraine intensified, GOLA became a means for survival and escapism. Kristina and her bandmates, all with backgrounds in various projects, began writing and recording at home using basic setups. It was a DIY approach that was raw, real, and meaningful.
GOLA’s sound defies labels. Sure they play rock, but influences come from everything from alternative metal to classic metal. Kristina is clear: “We are not concentrated on the genre.” They create what feels right, pulling from each member’s diverse influences.
Lyrically GOLA pulls from the reality of their lives. Kristina writes most of the lyrics digging into the struggle of daily life in a war-torn country. Their songs speak to both the light and the strength they find to keep on going. Tracks like ”В темноті (In the Darkness)” are about harsh truths but also about finding the side of light. “We are trying to give a little light in our souls.” Kristina says making it clear that their heavy music can still carry hope.
Their live shows are just as intense as their music. Every gig is a fundraising event for the Ukrainian military. In a time of constant air raid sirens and attacks, GOLA’s concerts are a rare moment of escape and unity. “For this hour, think about right now.” Kristina says. It’s about giving people a break, even if it’s brief.
GOLA’s approach to releases matches their current reality, just singles one after another. Tracks like “Пустота (Emptiness)” hit hard, dealing with the struggle to disconnect from the chaos and find your own path. Albums require time, stability, and big plans, none of which are guaranteed. Kristina explains that it’s better to do what you can now, without waiting for some perfect future that might never come. In a country under siege, GOLA’s philosophy is simple: Do what you want, while you can.
The future is unpredictable, but GOLA isn’t stopping. Kristina hopes for peace, the chance to play across Ukraine, and beyond. But for now, they are focused on what’s in front of them. “We hope for peace, for rock, for everyone happiness.” GOLA’s music is a testament to survival of creativity against all odds.
