Haunted Plasma’s debut album “I,” released on May 31, 2024, offers a musical landscape where electronic music and metal converge. In an interview, Juho Vanhanen (Oranssi Pazuzu, Grave Pleasures) and Timo Kaukolampi (K-X-P, Op:l Bastards) discuss the band’s unique musical journey.

Haunted Plasma’s atypical musical journey began as a special project for the online version of the Roadburn Redux festival in 2021. Kaukolampi, Vanhanen, and Tomi Leppänen seized the opportunity to create something new and different. The band members gathered in Timo’s studio, where they got to know each other both musically and personally. The original jam session in the studio gradually evolved into an album where improvisation freely shaped the final sound.

Vanhanen describes the process as a “backwards into the tree” approach, where musical ideas emerged organically and developed through collaboration. This free-form approach not only preserved the spirit of the original jam session but also allowed the tracks to be finalized in the studio without losing their spontaneity.

Haunted Plasma views themselves as “liberated futurists,” who believe in the creative power of music. This attitude is also reflected in their future plans. The band already has plenty of jam material that might still be utilized. Moreover, they are interested in continuing their musical exploration through new sessions now that the group’s internal dynamics have evolved since their first meeting.
