Finnish rock band Likaiset Pikkarit recently released their second album, “Hukkaan heitettyä aikaa” (“Wasted Time”). In an in-depth interview, the band discusses the album’s creative process, band dynamics, and their future plans.

The album was created in two distinct phases: roughly half the material was completed almost a year and a half ago, while the other half came together rapidly right before heading into the studio. The process was described as intense, especially during the final phase. According to the band, this time every member actively participated in songwriting and arrangements, marking a significant shift from their debut album.

Songwriting generally unfolded in two ways: either vocalist-guitarist Nipe brought in a complete demo that the band arranged together, or songs were spontaneously crafted at rehearsals from individual riffs. As an example of their collaborative effort, the band highlights the track “Kolme toivetta” (“Three Wishes”), which was fully developed from start to finish by all band members.

Lyrically “Hukkaan heitettyä aikaa” explores personal and emotional themes. The band deliberately avoids making political statements, instead leaving songs open to listeners’ interpretations. Their main goal is to create positive energy and offer listeners a momentary escape from daily life. Musically the album leans more towards rock compared to their previous punk-influenced release, although punk elements are still there.

Band members draw inspiration from a diverse range of genres, including blues, 1950s rock ‘n’ roll, Foo Fighters, and jazz. However, strong melodies and emotional depth remain at the core of their music, traits that strongly translate into their energetic live performances. After a long break, the album release show vividly demonstrated the band’s tight group chemistry. According to the members, the most important part of performing live is having fun and embracing the inevitable mistakes.

Likaiset Pikkarit are currently focused on performing live shows but have already begun considering their third album, which they plan to create with the same collaborative spirit. Looking ahead, the band hopes for extensive touring across Finland and primarily aims to continue enjoying the process of making music.
