Emerging from the heart of Berlin’s punk scene, Menstruationsmassaker is a band with a mission that goes beyond music. Formed in 2019, the band’s origin story is rooted in the city’s grassroots youth culture.

The band started with covers being their primary output as they honed their skills. However, it wasn’t long before their punk spirit demanded something more original and deeply personal. “We were beginners, but we had this fire inside us.” they recall. The drive to create something authentic pushed them to write their own songs, with feminism and personal experiences becoming central themes. “From the beginning our music was political. It had to be.” they state.

While punk has always been a platform for political expression, Menstruationsmassaker brings a fresh and confrontational perspective to the genre. Their music, often described as a blend of anger and irony, tackles issues like sexism with both raw emotion and a sardonic edge. “We’re angry, but we also laugh about it. That’s how we deal with the bullshit.” they explain. This balance between rage and humor has helped them carve out a niche in the Berlin punk scene, where they’ve been warmly welcomed.

Despite their relatively recent formation, Menstruationsmassaker has made a significant impact. Their music, described as danceable yet deeply charged with political messages, offers a refreshing take on punk, standing out amidst the more conventional post-punk sounds currently hip. “People tell us it’s different, and that’s what we’re going for.” they assert. The band’s live performances have become known not just for the music but for the connected energy they bring to the stage.

Berlin’s punk scene, with its rich history of feminist bands, has provided a supportive environment for the band’s growth. However, the city’s ongoing gentrification presents challenges. “It’s sad to see so many venues close.” they lament. Despite these challenges they remain hopeful, believing that new spaces will emerge as old ones disappear.

Looking ahead, Menstruationsmassaker is focused on the future. They’re in the process of refining their sound and preparing for more professional recordings. The band is planning to release singles in the near future, with ambitions for a full-length album down the line. “We’re testing things out, seeing what sticks.” they say, reflecting their experimental and open-minded approach to their music. Touring is also on the horizon, with hopes of hitting the road in Germany next year.

Ultimately, Menstruationsmassaker is about more than just music; it’s about using their platform to make a statement. Growing up in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district, a place known for its political activism, has deeply influenced their music and their approach to life. “Kreuzberg taught me to stand up and say something!” they reflect.
